Jim Ellis Chevrolet Buick GMC's Service Department serving Duluth, Marietta, Roswell and Alpharetta recommends "GM's Oil Life System." General Motors vehicles equipped with the oil life monitor will tell you when to change your oil - it's no longer necessary to change your oil every 3,000 miles!

We know. Just like you, our grandfathers told our fathers who told us to change the oil every 3,000 miles! However, the advanced technology on GM vehicles today make changing the oil every 3,000 miles unnecessary and a waste of oil, time, and money.

So, how do you tell when it's time to change your oil? Simple. When the "Change Oil Light" comes on or at least once a year. This averages every 7,500 miles but can be more or less depending on your driving conditions and how you drive your vehicle. Nowadays, if you own a new Chevrolet Camaro, Silverado 1500, Sonic, Impala or Silverado 2500 with an oil life monitor and your dealer is telling you to come in every 3,000 miles, then they must just be trying to get more opportunities to sell you stuff, stuff you may or may not need!

That said, Jim Ellis recommends that your bring your GM vehicle to us every 5,000 miles for an oil and filter change, tire rotation, and general "check up."

Maintenance I Service Package
This package is to be performed when the Change Oil light comes on or within 10 months since the vehicle was purchased. It is also used at the next maintenance interval after Maintenance II has been performed. Maintenance I includes:
-Change the engine oil and filter and reset oil life system monitor.
-Inspect engine air cleaner/filter - replace as needed.
-Rotate tires and check inflation pressures and wear and inspect brake system.
-Check engine coolant and washer fluids, ad as needed.
-Perform any needed additional services.

Maintenance II Service Package
This package is performed when the next service is due after Maintenance I:
-All items included in Maintenance 1.
-Inspect suspension and steering components and engine cooling system.
-Inspect wiper blades, restraint system components, and throttle system
-Lubricate body components.

Oil Changes & The Oil Life System

Engine Oil Life System
Most Chevrolet vehicles are now equipped with Engine Oil Life System. This system actually senses your vehicle's speed and engine temperature and can continuously monitor operating conditions. This helps determine when it's time to change the oil.

This Oil Life System can actually monitor your personal driving habits and your area's climate conditions to let you know precisely when to come in for an oil change. When the OLS light comes on, you come in. It's that simple. It will help you save money and help reduce oil waste.

Your Certified Service technician will reset your Oil Life System after an oil change. If you would like to reset the system yourself, ask your technician how.

Are Your Brakes Signaling A Problem?
Sometimes, your Chevrolet vehicle's brakes will alert you when there is trouble. Whistling noises, chirping sounds, and grinding are indications that brake service is required. Here are some common causes of brake pedal pulsation and/or noise:
- Worn brake pads
-Heat-cracked or worn rotors
-Loose-fitting brake pads in the caliper
-Missing or damaged noise insulators
-Uneven torque of lug nuts or caliper hardware

Vehicles often come equipped with a small, thin piece of metal attached to the brake pad to act as a warning indicator when the pad material is getting low and the brake pads should be replaced.
