The Volt is not a hybrid! It is a plug-in electric with a gasoline range extender (generator). The generator is not connected to the drive wheels; the Volt is driven by an electric motor only. The generator provides the electricity when the batteries deplete (25 to 45 miles per charge is what we've observed.) But worry not (like you have to do in an all-electric like the Nissan Leaf) if the batteries run out. The generator will come on and you can keep going. Example: Trip from Atlanta to Destin in a Volt: no problem. In a Leaf: can't do it.
Example of usage: An employee here lives 30 miles from the dealership. Plug it in at work and it's gas-free (costs about $2.00) to get home. This particular Volt hasn't seen a gas station in weeks! The potential "gas mileage" is unlimited if you keep it plugged in!
