Start With the Powertrain

When someone’s interested in a casual truck like the midsize Chevy Colorado, then we might suggest starting with trim levels and options to make sure they get the comfort and tech features they want most. But with a powerful work truck like the Silverado 2500 HD, there’s no better place to start than with the engines and the kind of capabilities you need from your pickup.

You’ve got two engines available for this truck, starting with a standard 6.6L V8 gas engine that provides up to 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. We should mention that both engines come with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and you can choose between two-wheel drive (4×2) and four-wheel drive (4×4) to best meet your needs.

If you want greater power and more impressive capabilities from your truck, a 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 engine is available, delivering up to 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque. You can see that’s a huge boost in torque compared to the gas engine, which allows it to handle more weight and get some serious work done.

When choosing between these engines, it’s important to consider how much weight your truck will need to tow or carry. For reference, here are the max payload and towing capacities:

Each of these has its own personality and distinct features, so this is an important decision. We can’t get too deep into their specifics today, but here’s a brief overview of each one to give you a sense of what they provide:

• WT: The starting trim for the Silverado 2500 HD, this is the perfect choice if you prefer minimal features or have a fleet of work trucks. You get 17-inch wheels, black bumpers, and halogen headlamps here. Inside the WT, you’ll find a seven-inch central display, a 3.5-inch monochromatic driver information center, a basic sound system, and vinyl seating.
• Custom: For some enhanced features without too many upgrades, the Custom is a good choice. This trim comes with larger 20-inch wheels (that can enhance towing capabilities), body-color bumpers, and cloth seating standard.
• LT: The LT trim marks a significant upgrade for this truck, starting with chrome bumpers and an EZ-Lift assist tailgate with power lock and release. Inside, you get an impressive 13.4-inch central display, a 12.3-inch driver information center screen, and more.
• LTZ: In much the same way, the LT upgrades this truck’s interior; the LTZ upgrades its exterior. You get standard 18-inch wheels, chrome bumpers, and animated LED projector headlamps with LED turn signals, tail lamps, and fog lamps. The LTZ also has Hitch View, which helps eliminate blind spots and makes towing easier.
• High Country: This is the way to go if you want the most advanced features for your truck, including 20-inch wheels, six-inch chrome assist steps, a spray-on bedliner, and a power up and down tailgate. Inside, you get perforated leather front seating, a Bose Premium sound system, and even a wireless charging pad, making this the ultimate mobile office.
• ZR2: If you need to be able to reach remote sites beyond paved roads, then this is the one for you. The ZR2 features a high-performance lifted suspension with Multimatic DSSV dampers, skid plates to protect its underside, an Autotrac 2-speed transfer case, and more.

Keep in mind that you have plenty of extra packages and options to choose from across all these trims so that you can customize them further.

If you want to keep things simple with the WT model but prefer cloth seating over vinyl, that’s an available option. This makes it easy to get something that perfectly meets your needs without going overboard or missing anything you really want.
