You can always count on the Chevy Silverado to break molds, push boundaries, and extend the segment of full-size pickup trucks beyond your wildest expectations. The 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 is no exception, somehow still finding ways to bring truck drivers something new and exciting. This light-duty pickup is highly versatile, covering everything from daily driving to hard work, off-road traversal, and wildland adventuring.

There is a lot that's new for the 2024 model; this includes the rebranding of the high-output 2.7L four-cylinder powertrain as the "TurboMax," which is a fitting name given its high-output performance and capabilities even with a smaller displacement compared to the other powerplants in the Silverado's repertoire. Additionally, the Duramax Turbo-Diesel is available as an optional powertrain for the highly rugged ZR2, and you also have the active dual exhaust with an included Sport Mode for the 6.2L V8.

When it comes to new trim offerings, the Midnight Edition—with its black exterior and matching black accents, retractable power steps, and LED lighting—is now available for the High Country. Alternatively, you can get a comparable Blackout Appearance Package for the Custom, Custom Trail Boss, RST, LT Trail Boss, and the ZR2. The 2024 Silverado 1500 is available in a total of nine different trims, which include the WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, High Country, and ZR2.

Other new features for the 2024 model year include Adaptive Cruise Control being made standard on the High Country, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto—along with OnStar support—is now standard on the base WT trim. Finally, two new colors join the lineup in the form of Lakeshore Blue Metallic and Slate Gray Metallic.

  • Performance

The 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 has four distinct powertrains to define its performance for this model year, available in two different drivetrain configurations, including rear-wheel and four-wheel drive.

This powertrain lineup starts with the extremely capable 2.7L TurboMax inline four-cylinder, which has proven to be quite the powerhouse in its own right. In fact, even with a smaller displacement than its larger siblings, this powerplant delivers an impressive 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque, making it not only excellent for daily travel but also for some light off-roading, towing, and trailering. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the TurboMax tops its fuel economy at an EPA-estimated 19 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway.

The 5.3L V8 is next in line, capable of producing 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. It's paired up with a ten-speed automatic transmission and can utilize E85 flex-fuel. The 5.3L V8 is capable of an EPA-estimated 17 MPG in the city and 21 MPG on the highway.

The 6.2L V8 offers more power and performance, giving you one of the best available options for towing, trailering, and off-road traversal. The 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 delivers 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, and it's only available in four-wheel drive for maximum efficiency. Both iterations of the V8 also are available with variable valve timing and dynamic fuel management.

Finally, there is the 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel; this inline six-cylinder provides the Silverado 1500 with up to 305 hp and a highly impressive 495 lb-ft of torque—and, like both the V8 options, the Duramax is paired up with a ten-speed automatic transmission. The Duramax manages the best fuel economy out of the Silverado's powertrain lineup, topping out at an EPA-estimated 24 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway.

Additionally, the Silverado 1500 is powered by StabiliTrak, which handles traction control and stability management for this light-duty pickup truck. The Silverado 1500 also houses four-wheel disc brakes with electric-hydraulic power-assisted anti-lock brakes with vented Duralife rotors, so you get maximum stopping power whether you're driving the truck solo or you have a trailer hitched to the back of the truck.

You also have multiple wheel options for the Silverado, available in 17-inch standard steel designs, along with 18-inch aluminum wheels, 20-inch aluminum wheels, and 22-inch aluminum wheels. Some tires scale up to 32 inches of the Goodyear Wrangler variety for those looking for rugged off-road treads.

  • Capabilities

Having a lot of power for a pickup is only as useful as the truck it's given to. The good news is that the 2024 Silverado 1500 is more than capable when it comes to utilitarian work. It can haul, it can tow, it can trailer, and it has lots of great features for truck drivers to make use of in efficient and functional ways.

When it comes to towing—when properly equipped—the TurboMax is capable of moving up to 9,500 lbs. The 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 can tow up to 11,300 lbs, while the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 and 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel can each tow up to 13,300 lbs. These are highly remarkable specs, especially given the multi-purpose functionality that the Silverado is capable of, including off-road traversal and hosting luxury trims.

Additionally, the Silverado 1500 has a payload capacity that is quite notable. Its base payload rating is 1,970 lbs, but the 2024 Silverado 1500 can achieve a maximum payload rating of 2,260 lbs across multiple bed configurations. It's available in a five-foot, eight-inch short bed, a six-foot, six-inch standard bed, and an eight-foot, two-inch long bed; with the short bed, you have up to 62.9 cu.ft. of cargo capacity in the rear, while the standard bed offers up to 71.7 cu.ft. of cargo capacity, and the long bed affords you up to 89.1 cu.ft. of cargo volume.

In addition to the three-bed sizes, there are three cab sizes: a Regular Cab, a Double Cab, and a Crew Cab. The Silverado also features tow hooks for when you need them, as well as the highly versatile Multi-Flex Tailgate, which comes with six different functions; you can use it as a step into the bed box, as a two-level load stop, or as an elevated workbench, in addition to coming fully equipped with twelve tie-down cleats and bed-mounted outlets. This helps give the Silverado 1500 a much more distinct separation from other full-size pickups on the market.

  • Convenience

Getting work done and being efficient on the road is one thing, but the Silverado 1500 is more than just a work truck; it comes with a lot of comfort and convenience features. You have power-adjustable driver and front passenger seats, heated seats and steering wheel, power windows and locks, multiple cup holders, and copious storage compartments. What's more is the availability of lots of trailering tech, including seven- and four-pin connectors, trailer brake controller, and Hitch Guidance, so you can conveniently hook up and hitch a trailer to the truck with visual feedback.

This trailering tech is also buffed by the Chevy Safety Assist driver assistance suite, which consists of proactive tools like Forward Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning. Adaptive Cruise Control is also available, along with IntelliBeam High Beam Assist. Chevy's Teen Driver mode is also standard across every trim, enabling you to keep report cards on your new driver's driving habits and ensure that safety checks are met before they can depart from the driveway.

Best yet, the High Country comes with the available Super Cruise feature, enabling you to take advantage of semi-autonomous, hands-free driving across more than 200,000 miles of compatible roads across North America.

These generous tech features also extend to the infotainment section, which includes a massive digital dashboard real-estate: a 13.4-inch touchscreen interface and an accompanying digital driver display with vehicle health telemetry. Standard integration for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto helps bolster the appeal of the Silverado 1500, along with wireless charging and Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity for multiple devices.

Additionally, you can access OnStar and Chevrolet Connected Services for additional support while traveling, including quick contact with emergency services, navigation support, and more. Google Built-In services power this entire infotainment suite, so you have instant access to voice-activated commands, Google Play apps, and the Google Assistant; this makes the Silverado 1500 the complete package regarding capabilities, performance, safety, and tech convenience.
