  Every few years, automakers make major upgrades to their existing vehicles. These new enhancements are part of the next generation in the history of the lineage of these models. However, Chevy did something different with the Trax. This popular subcompact SUV was discontinued after the 2022 model year, leading some in the auto industry to think the Trax was dead. However, reports of the demise of the Trax were greatly exaggerated. Instead, rather than put out of a 2023 model, Chevy had the Trax take the year off to focus on coming back in 2024 with a bolder, roomier, sportier, and more advanced model. The result is the 2024 Chevy Trax, one of the best values in the subcompact SUV field.

  Chevy figured out how to make major improvements on the Trax while at the same time reducing its base price. That's right; the base 2024 Chevy Trax LS has an MSRP of $20,400, a full $1,000 less than the MSRP of the 2023 LS model. In return, you get a roomier Trax with a more fuel-efficient engine and a greater amount of technology. The Chevy Trax debuted in 2015, and by 2022 it was time for a change. But by taking a different route, discontinuing production for one year, Chevy has been able to offer you a more advanced model that is also more affordable. That is what is known as a win-win proposition.

• Performance

  

  The 2024 Chevy Trax comes in five different trim levels, which is three more than were offered on the 2022 model. However, like the 2022 Trax, each 2024 Chevy Trax comes with a standard engine: a 1.2-liter EcoTec Turbo I-3. It has a high-pressure die-cast aluminum engine block with die-cast aluminum cylinder heads and features a dual overhead camshaft configuration (DOHC) with 12 valves for the engine's three cylinders. It utilizes a turbocharger and direct injection to provide up to 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. It's also complemented by a 6-speed automatic transmission on the 2024 Trax, a carryover from the 2022 model.

  Fuel Economy

  The 2024 Chevy Trax delivers phenomenal fuel economy, making it an excellent choice for a commuter or someone looking for a daily driver. It gets 32 MPG in highway driving, which is the same as the 2022 model; however, it will get you an astounding 28 MPG in city driving, which is why the combined fuel economy on the 2024 Trax is a very impressive 30 MPG. These are both significantly higher than on first-generation models.

  Acceleration and Handling

  The sporty new looks on the Trax are for more than just show. They provide a much more aerodynamic ride for the vehicle. As a result, the 2024 Trax can go from 0 to 60 mph in 8.8 seconds, plenty of speed to let you merge safely onto a busy highway. The Trax itself has a top speed of 115 mph. This is truly impressive for a three-cylinder vehicle and a credit to the engineering that Chevrolet has put into the new generation Trax.

  As for handling, Chevy has equipped the 2024 Trax with an electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system that will give you a good feel for the road. The Trax has a 106-inch wheelbase, slightly longer than the prior generation's model. However, it is still very maneuverable and easy to park. The front suspension features MacPherson Struts with a coil-over spring design and a direct-acting stabilizer bar. The rear suspension consists of a Compound Crank torsion beam design with coil springs and twin-tube shock absorbers, giving you and your passengers a pleasant and comfortable ride.

  When you open the door and look inside the 2024 Chevy Trax, you will be struck by the fact that the new generation features a spacious interior that is well-appointed with an attention to comfort and convenience. In fact, the Trax has over 99 cu.ft. of space for up to five passengers to sit comfortably in its two rows of seats.

  Passenger Space

  Taking a closer look at the 2024 Trax, you will see that Chevy has done a masterful job of apportioning the space between the two rows so that everyone can have plenty of room to stretch out. For example, front-row passengers get 41.9 inches of legroom, while those seated in the rear get 38.7 inches; that is a lot of legroom for a subcompact SUV model. Similarly, passengers seated in the rear bench seat will appreciate having 54.3 inches of shoulder room, so they won't feel squeezed together. This will help you reduce fights between your passengers over who gets to ride shotgun.

  Cargo Capacity

  Chevy has also increased the trunk space on the Trax. The all-new 2024 Trax has a very roomy 25.6 cu.ft. of trunk space. This is significantly more than the 18.7 cu.ft. on the first-generation model. If you need more space, you can easily fold down the 60/40 split bench in the rear to free up 54.1 cu.ft. for cargo; this is almost six more cu.ft. of space for cargo in the new generation Trax than in the previous 2022 model.

  Interior Appointments

  The interior appointments on the 2024 Trax show how Chevy has used the extra year to truly upgrade this model. The LS and 1RS models have a very attractive cloth seat trim, while the LT has a mix of cloth and Evotex, a synthetic fabric that looks and feels just like leather. If you love the Evotex, consider the 2RS and ACTIV models with seats fully upholstered in this fabric. In addition, all models have heated front seats, except for the LS, which is an available option. This will come in especially handy on chilly mornings. The 1RS and 2RS models of the 2024 Trax have a more sporty theme and come with standard wrapped flat-bottom steering wheels to improve handling while also looking sharp.

  Chevy has pulled out the stops regarding technology on the 2024 Trax. This shows how Chevy is willing to use innovation to improve its vehicles while still delivering an incredibly affordable model. Two areas where technological innovation stands out are safety and infotainment.

  Chevy Safety Assist

  The 2024 Chevy Trax comes equipped with the Chevy Safety Assist suite, a group of standard driver assistance features that show Chevy's commitment to passenger safety. In all, there are six tools that work as part of Chevy Safety Assist, helping to keep you and your passengers safe. One of the most common causes of highway accidents occurs when drivers drift out of their lane; a momentary distraction can lead to a major collision. Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning helps you avoid this. If your Trax begins to drift into the other lane, you will be given an audible warning. In addition, the system will use slight steering adjustments to help keep your Trax centered on the straight and narrow.

  Sometimes, drivers in front of you will come to a complete stop. If you don't anticipate their actions or are following them too close, you can end up in a front-end collision. The Following Distance Indicator will help you avoid this dangerous situation by warning you if you are too close while also letting you know how close you are to the vehicle in front of you.

  If a collision is imminent, the Forward Collision Alert will sound, telling you to take evasive action, such as swerving to avoid a crash or hitting the brakes. In addition, the Automatic Emergency Braking system will engage to bring your Trax to a stop so you can avoid a crash or reduce the impact of a collision. A similar system works for pedestrians. If you are traveling on a local road and a pedestrian steps out in front of your vehicle, the Front Pedestrian Braking will engage, helping you avoid striking the pedestrian.

  When driving late at night, you sometimes need to turn on your high-beam headlights to see; this can be a hassle and can also create a possible problem if you forget to turn them off when you see oncoming traffic. Fortunately, every 2024 Chevy Trax features IntelliBeam auto high beams. These will automatically turn on when you reach an area of poor lighting, and once the lighting improves or the system detects another motorist, they will automatically turn off, allowing you to better focus on the road.

  Every 2024 Chevy Trax also comes with an HD Rear Vision Camera and the Teen Driver system, making the Trax an ideal choice for your young driver's first vehicle.   The new Trax has some of the most advanced infotainment features ever offered on this model.
