Multimatic has created the ultimate shocks for off-road performance (as well as improved on-road handling and utility) with its triangular-shaped chambered spool valve shocks that increase suspension travel and provide enough damping for a full-size truck. These spool valves give precise and predictable fluid control, whereas other shocks rely on flexible shim stacks, so you can expect smoother recoiling and less bottoming out. Combine this with the steel skid plates beneath the front, underbody, and transfer case, and your major rock-crawling and feats of airtime just got a lot more fun.
For your runs in the mud, a steel bumper with recovery hooks in the front and back will keep you retrievable even in the deepest, roughest terrain. The ZR2 trim comes standard with 18-inch machined aluminum wheels painted in gloss black, and they’re wrapped with Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires for unbeatable off-road traction.
Powerful Performance
Amazing suspension isn’t much without an underhood powerhouse to make it move, and Chevy delivers two outstanding options: the standard 6.6-liter V8 gas engine or the available 6.6-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8, both paired with a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission—a staple in Chevy’s heavy-duty rides. Although both engines will take you where you want to go, the stronger workhorse between the two is the Duramax Turbo-Diesel. With 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque, there’s hardly going to be a steep, rocky, or sandy trail you couldn’t race through. (For comparison, the V8 gas engine delivers 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. These are still great figures, but the diesel engine clearly makes for better off-road driving with its exceptionally high torque stat.)
Locking front and rear axles, four-wheel drive high and low gears, and driver assistance features like Hill Descent Control (which uses the antilock braking to help provide a smooth, controlled descent without depressing the brake pedal) are going to take your off-road driving to the next level. The off-road information screen will show you the yaw and lean of your truck using balance sensing technology, and these figures can even be projected through the head-up display onto the lower half of your windshield, so you can keep your eyes on the trail without having to look down at the dash.
