If you could choose just one vehicle to symbolize versatility and strength, it would be the pickup truck—and if there's one brand continually proven to be the best at redefining the pickup as a symbol of power and performance, it would be Chevy. For over a century, drivers from all walks of life have come to trust the bowtie brand for their automotive needs, no matter what they might be.

In an age where trucks and SUVs are the most sought-after commodities in the automotive marketplace, Chevy continues to shift the paradigm. As a new model year yields its fruit, there's much to be excited about—particularly with the arrival of the 2025 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD—and the team at Jim Ellis Chevrolet has taken the time to break down the impressive attributes of this heavy-duty truck that only Chevy could bestow upon the working world.

    Gas-Powered 6.6L V8

A truck such as the heavy-duty 2025 Chevy Silverado 2500 is designed for the arduous tasks of the working world and to facilitate adventures in the rough-and-tumble world of off-roading. No matter which activity you plan on using the Silverado 2500 for, having a capable powertrain makes all the difference. As has been par for the course, the Silverado 2500 has two available engines, offering the best performance that one could ask for.

The standard powertrain for the Silverado 2500 is a gasoline-powered 6.6L V8 that produces 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. The gas-powered V8 and its diesel-fueled counterpart are paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission for seamless shifting and optimal performance.

The gas V8 offers exceptional towing capacity, which varies on cab configuration and drivetrain. In conventional towing, the gas V8 can pull 14,500 to 16,000 lbs, making it more than capable of handling worksite obligations. The Silverado 2500 also excels in fifth wheel and gooseneck towing, with a 2WD model with a regular cab able to pull 18,700 lbs; the capacities for fifth wheel and gooseneck towing vary by configuration but are impressive, with the lowest at 17,900 lbs; the highest rating belongs to the 2WD Silverado 2500.

    6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8

One of Chevy's significant accomplishments is revitalizing the diesel-fueled powertrain. The Duramax series of engines is known for its exceptional towing capacity and large amount of torque produced while operating at lower RPMs and offering better fuel economy figures than many of its gasoline-powered contemporaries.

The second available powertrain for the Silverado 2500 is a 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8, which is no exception to diesel power's raw capability. Boasting 470 hp and the ability to generate 975 lb-ft of torque—both of which are produced at low RPMs, at 2,800 and 1,600, respectively—the Duramax V8 also comes equipped with an engine block heater and cooling feature for those moments when you need to push performance to the absolute limit.

This engine's performance specifications are impressive, and its workhorse capabilities defy all expectations. Equipping the Silverado 2500 with the Duramax V8 opens access to extraordinary towing capabilities. Conventional towing varies by cab configuration and drivetrain, with ratings between 14,500 and 18,500 lbs. To unlock the best traditional capacity of towing with the Duramax, one must opt for the crew cab with a long bed, which can pull 20,000 lbs when properly equipped. As with the gasoline-fueled V8, the Duramax V8 also excels at fifth wheel and gooseneck towing; capabilities vary, but when properly equipped, the crew cab can facilitate a towing capacity of 22,430 lbs.

Chevy's reputation for providing highly capable solutions for the working world is well-established. No matter what you might be looking to accomplish on the job site or anywhere else, both engine options provide generous power levels that rivals are finding tough to replicate.

  • Technology

    Chevy Infotainment System

Many are familiar with the performance and power of the heavy-duty Silverado 2500. Modern drivers require much more than a powertrain to facilitate their different tasks and daily commute. Chevy, a brand that has always been aware of consumer needs, ensures drivers can access the technology and apps used daily. These are accessed via an infotainment screen, of which the Silverado 2500 has two available options.

The standard screen on the base trims of the Silverado 2500 is a seven-inch touchscreen that offers access to many of the features that the modern driver uses daily. The touchscreen provides compatibility with Apple and Android products and voice command activation on select phones. Two devices can be streamed simultaneously via Bluetooth, and apps on your smartphone can be accessed from the screen.

The upper trims of the Silverado 2500 have a state-of-the-art screen that offers much more clarity and advanced technologies. This 13.4-inch screen provides wireless connectivity with Apple and Android products and has Google Built-In, allowing you to access maps, music, and more.

    Driver Assistance Features

The rich palette of technology that graces the Chevy Silverado 2500 extends far beyond infotainment and keeps drivers connected to the apps needed in our ever-increasing digital world. Safety is the most important aspect of any vehicle you purchase, and Chevy equips its heavy-duty workhorse with a wide range of standard and available features.

As is par for the course with any vehicle manufactured by Chevy, the Silverado 2500 comes with Chevy Safety Assist, a comprehensive suite of standard features that are in place to provide oversight and an added layer of protection during your travels. It includes...

Forward Collision Alert: When a potential collision is recognized, using radar and camera-based technology, the forward collision alert issues a warning, providing additional oversight.

Automatic Emergency Braking: This is another tool to ensure reaction time. It works in conjunction with the forward collision alert to apply pressure to the brakes to cease forward momentum and avoid a potential collision.

Following Distance Indicator: Maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you on the road is essential for preserving your reaction time. With this oversight, you can follow at a safe distance.

Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning: We tend to be responsible drivers who understand the importance of maintaining a correct position in our lane, but even the most conscientious driver can become distracted, and visibility isn't always at its best. This tool issues alerts if you begin to drift off course.

Front Pedestrian Braking: We must be mindful of the other vehicles we share the road with, including pedestrians. Front pedestrian braking is critical in monitoring the proximity of their travels.

IntelliBeam Auto High Beams: Visibility is essential for safe travels. Chevy's automated high beam technology engages when visibility is limited and disengages at the onset of approaching traffic.

    Outfitting Your Silverado

Depending on how much you want to get out of the heavy-duty Silverado 2500, various packages can bring out different strengths and styles. These can be essential in increasing technology, safety, and capability, and the following are among the popular...

Z71 Off-Road Package: This package is for drivers who want to unleash Chevy's off-roading capabilities. It includes skid plates, 17-inch all-terrain tires, Hill Descent Control, and an off-road suspension formulated explicitly for the road less traveled.

Safety Package: Available on select trims, the Safety Package provides the ultimate oversight, particularly for those planning to do a fair amount of towing and trailering. You will have the added layer of protection that comes with rear park assistance and rear cross-traffic alerts, the trailering app, multiple camera positions to keep an eye on your cargo, and a trailer blind-side alert.

Max Trailering Package: The towing capabilities of the Silverado 2500, courtesy of its exceptional powertrains, are second to none; the Max Trailering Package is what you need to unleash its fullest towing potential. The Max Trailering Package outfits the Silverado 2500 with the frame and leaf springs found on the Silverado 3500 and includes a more prominent rear axle. Additional upgrades include shocks and the means to engage in gooseneck and fifth wheel towing.

Convenience Package II: Another essential bundle for those who use a Silverado 2500 for work, the Convenience Package II includes trailering items such as hitch guidance and view, which make hooking up and detaching easier than ever. Access to the in-vehicle trailering app means having additional oversight while traveling with a payload. A 120-volt box-mounted power outlet allows additional tasks to be accomplished, thanks to the ability to hook up items such as lighting and laptops.

Other items can be added to the Silverado 2500, such as a spray-on bedliner and GM's Multi-Flex tailgate.
